What do You Call a Group of Tangles?

Maria writes…

Dear Tanglers,

Did you know that there are specific and different names for groups of creatures? Really! And really interesting names – some unexpected, some funny, some apropos, and some, most certainly are not.

A swarm of bees.
A pride of lions.
An unkindness of ravens.
A pack of wolves.
A murder of crows.

I was thinking about this the other day and I realized that we do not have a specific name for a group of tangles . . . or for that matter, for a group of tanglers! How could that possibly be right? How did we survive this long (17 years!)?

Well, I think it is certainly time to remedy this situation. Of course, we decided that you, our beloved Zentangle community, should be the ones to do this.

So . . . your mission is to come up with names for

A GROUP OF TANGLES

And

A GROUP OF TANGLERS

And, perhaps the story about how you came up with the names; and the wonderful staff here at ZTHQ will choose a name!

We will have most excellent prizes for this, possible including a copy of the artwork shown above! So, don’t hold back! We will announce the winners in next week’s blog

So, put on your thinking caps and give it a think!

We can’t wait to hear what you came up with.

  • I neglected on my first post to tell the story about my suggestions. I love words (and Zentangle) and was inspired by this blog post to stop scurrying around being too busy and take some quiet time to reflect and work on a classic Zentangle tile. While creating deliberate lines of Shattuck with a black Pigma Micron 01, and enjoying the feeling of pen on paper, I thought of how I appreciate tangles as inspiration, so I suggested an Inspiration of Tangles. Reading all the other posts is great fun, with our varied backgrounds along with our shared enthusiasm. So many of the collective nouns from other comments resonated with me, and I felt a strong affinity for my fellow tanglers. So, I suggested an Affinity of Tanglers. While finishing the tile with a touch of Mooka and Tipple, an Aspiration of Tangles (as in a hope or ambition of achieving something) and an Affirmation of Tanglers also came to mind. And while I am on the website, it’s time to order more tiles and pens!

  • Hi all, ☘️😁

This is such an awesome discussion. Below are my thoughts

1: a Troupe of Tanglers – Troupe is used to describe a group of Artists so I thought it made sense to call a group of Tanglers a Troupe also

2: a Mathnat of Tangles – I have chosen this word to describe a group of Tangles given that Pattern can be Mathematical and/or from Nature

Lots of wonderful ideas flying around..💫 wonderful 👌⭐

  • A Zenith of Tangles – “the time at which something is most powerful or successful”

and Zenithal of Tanglers – “showing correct directions from the center a zenithal map”

Another option is a Tangent of Tangles (geometrical relating to curves and straight lines and trigonometry) and A Transglobal of Tanglers!

Mostly I feel we are a Zenith of ZenTanglers (are we not all at our most powerful and successful while creating Zen in Zentangles?) and a Zen of Zentangles! I like a Pride of Zentanglers also! lol

  • A Pantry of Tangles

This sprung into my mind at 5am … I often have my best ideas in the early morning hours. The thought came to me because Julie often mentions her Mac ‘n Cheese tangle Marisu. I like that term so much and Julie’s videos are so wonderful.

    A Deliberation of Tanglers

My students are children … The most challenging thing to teach them is slowing down, beginning and ending each stroke carefully and deliberately. Deliberation also means thinking, calculating and deciding … I do this constantly while I’m tangling and see in my groups of tanglers pondering going on all the time.

    Afterthought:

    A Ponder of Tanglers

  • Group of Tanglers- Conjubliant
    Group of Tangles- Granulate

My thoughts- Tangling is always fun. Tanglers enjoy and shout ( actually no shout;) its a silent shout of rejoice)after completing tiles. We conjubliant together 😊

    Group of tangles is Granulate
The tangles tend to mingle and granulate in a attractive way!

  • I had so much fun reading everybody’s ideas. Here are mine -

Zenpendium of tangles – a collection or compilation of tangles. From the word compendium meaning a COLLECTION, COMPILATION https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/compendium.

Conzenerate of tanglers – a group (-ate) with (con) an approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasises simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on a goal (zen) and is one associated or involved with (-er) Zentangle.

    AND

conzener of tangles – a person with an approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasises simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on a goal and is one associated or involved with Zentangle

prefix con-, means “with” or “thoroughly,” https://www.etymonline.com/word/con-
zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on a goal https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Zen

  • I vote for “Tribe” of tanglers

    and
“Zengle” for a group of tanglers

Both are simple, succinct, and brilliant.
Sorry I can’t remember the tanglers who came up with those – too many posts to keep track of.

  • I tried to post a comment several hours ago, but I haven’t seen it listed, so here are my suggestions again:

A Trove of tangles (as in a treasure trove).
A Tribe of Tanglers – because we all seem to feel a kinship with others who engage in this art form.

  • An ‘arabesque’ of tangles.
Arabesque meaning both elaborate ornamental designs of intertwined patterns and a graceful dance position.
An ‘arabesque’ of tangles brings to my mind the image of an array of beautiful ballet dancers (tangles), all swirling about each other gracefully, awaiting to be chosen to take part in the next ballet dance (work of Zentangle art).

    A ‘talent’ of tanglers.
Meaning both gifted with a special ability and a measure of value. The gold talent is said to have weighed roughly the same as a person.
A ‘talent’ of tanglers brings to my mind the image of tanglers joining to share their own, and appreciate each others, artistic and creative abilities, each one ‘worth their unique weight in gold’ and contributing their gift to the whole.

  • A “Zeroot” of tangles. I came up with it on the simple basis that, in my opinion, tangles tend to operate much like the roots of trees in nature. They start off as one basic shoot and then start branching out into all different directions and not even thinking about its boundaries. They work their way around every obstacle (No mistakes). There are no rules except that it has to help grow the plant. To me, the roots are most important. They provide a strong foundation in the soil and they function by providing nutrients for the plant to grow (there are always opportunities), amongst other things. In my opinion groups of tangles function or behave the same exact way. They parallel each other in terms of function and even drawing, the way they interweave, etc. much like how tangles behave and are drawn. They eventually cause beautiful growth.

Since we help these tangles to grow, we are the tanglers. We are all unique and come from all different places, we speak the same Zentangle language and help it grow. I thought that a group of tanglers could be called a “Zreathe”. What is the one thing that we all have to do, no matter where we come from – we breathe. We breathe in Oxygen and we give off Carbon Dioxide which is an important component for the process of photosynthesis, which provides food for plants to grow. Plants take our Carbon Dioxide and use it in a beneficial way. Since Zentangle is quite meditative as well, I thought the name “Zreathe” to be quite fitting, amongst other reasons.
