What do You Call a Group of Tangles?

Maria writes…

Dear Tanglers,

Did you know that there are specific and different names for groups of creatures? Really! And really interesting names – some unexpected, some funny, some apropos, and some, most certainly are not.

A swarm of bees.
A pride of lions.
An unkindness of ravens.
A pack of wolves.
A murder of crows.

I was thinking about this the other day and I realized that we do not have a specific name for a group of tangles . . . or for that matter, for a group of tanglers! How could that possibly be right? How did we survive this long (17 years!)?

Well, I think it is certainly time to remedy this situation. Of course, we decided that you, our beloved Zentangle community, should be the ones to do this.

So . . . your mission is to come up with names for

A GROUP OF TANGLES

And

A GROUP OF TANGLERS

And, perhaps the story about how you came up with the names; and the wonderful staff here at ZTHQ will choose a name!

We will have most excellent prizes for this, possible including a copy of the artwork shown above! So, don’t hold back! We will announce the winners in next week’s blog

So, put on your thinking caps and give it a think!

We can’t wait to hear what you came up with.

  • A group of tangiers – “a praxis of Tangiers”

Praxis is a process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, or realized. “Praxis” may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing, or practicing ideas.

  • A group of tangles could be a TANGLORY – for the sheer glorious nature of the artform and the transcendent state of the artists.

A group of tanglers would have to be a TANGLE – due to the interconnected diversity of us all, just as in Zentangle!

I’ve only been tangling for a few months, but feel like this has always been with me 😄. I have a CRAZY work life, and appreciate the calming, centreing and grounding effect of Zentangle ❤

  • I have always referred to the tangles I use as my “palette” of tangles. It holds all those implications of colour and tone, and the ability to mix and come up with something new. It also holds that promise of creativity, of being able to bring them together in infinite ways to create something beautiful.

It also invites terminology like tangle tone (to describe classifications of tangles such as drama tangles) and perhaps tangle swatches for tangles which share DNA.

The word for a group of tanglers that has stuck in my head is a “murmur” of tanglers. It’s the quietness of tangling together, the scratching of the tortilions, the gentle encouragement we give each other, the voice of teachers in class, the intimacy with tangling and each other, the feeling of belonging….

  • Could they be called a Spangle of Tangles? 🤔

And a group would then be Spanglers?

To spangle is to decorate, adorn or make beautiful and we are indeed decorators of our tiles!

  • I think of basic practical name with a twist….
A group of tangles: ART (All Relaxing Tangles)

A groups of Tanglers: ARTISTS (people studying All Relaxing Tangles)

I was thinking how zentanging is meditative, relaxing, and promotes gratitude for the acronym.

  • A beam of tanglers. The word beam to me reflects a group of tanglers in that a beam is defined as a strong supportive structure as well as a light that shines brightly. In my experiences with tanglers, both expert and novice, tanglers possess the spirit of support as demonstrated each time they share ideas and creative technique. In addition tanglers even if they don’t realize it, shine their light brightly as beacons to enrich art and the meditative process that is Zentangling. I’ll think about a group of tangles and submit another comment.

  • A group of Tanglers are Tangleites. This sounds kind of soulful or a group on a spiritual quest.

And a group of tangles are Tangleorium. Sounds like a symphony. Many times a group of tangles makes beautiful music on your tile.

  • My first thought was to agree with Kim Springer: “grangle” and “granglers.” However, after googling it, I found those words to have a very dark, negative slang connotation that we would not want to have associated with the beauty and philosophy of Zentangle. So, instead, I vote with the person who suggested a “Rick” of tangles, and a “Maria” of tanglers. Why not? They started it all!

  • A “Tryst of Tangles” because I like an alliterative reference and this words spelling is odd enough that you don’t need to change it to fit into Zentomology. Most importantly, though, I can think of no more better way to describe the magic that occurs when we bring together tangles in a “private romantic interlude of lovers,” which is the definition that the New Oxford English Dictionary provides for “tryst”.

A “Tangente of Tanglers” because while we all share the common practice of creating tangents, where they go is totally up to the individual, yet we are a worldwide community and in Spanish ‘gente’ means people.

  • A “stew of tangles” contains hearty ingredients and plenty of spice to cook up a delicious tile du jour. An “appetite of tanglers” hungers for a few quiet moments with pen and paper and is ever grateful for the stew.

  • As a noun: a draw of tangles because we chose one tangle at a time. We tanglers are liners because we draw one stroke at a time.

  • A motif of tangles and a focus of tanglers.

  • A gathering of tanglers could be called a “grace” and the creations that flowed from their pens in essence, bloomed. They became “blossoms”.

  • A torrent of tangles because alliteration and who doesn’t have a torrent!

  • a Bevy of tangles…a Zeal of Zentanglers

Bevy is a large group or collection as in bevy of beauties or swans…our tangles emerge from “ugly ducklings” to “beautiful swans”.
Zeal is great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or objective…also a Zeal of Zebras 🦓 is representative of a black & white Zentangle tile!
You come up with the BEST challenges!

  • Sorry, I forgot to explain myself in my first comment. A serenity of tanglers, because whenever I think of a room full of tanglers, I think about the peace and calmness that I would expect to find in that room. A recipe of tangles, because they are like little recipes that give ingredients (types of strokes and embellishments) and instructions for putting them together into a pattern. And because the individual tangler has the freedom to interpret and alter the recipe to suit their taste.

I also think of a joy of tanglers, because tangling is such a joyful way of affirming life and creativity. Maybe also, a spell of tangles, because they are like little magic spells that create amazing beauty out of very basic, simple things with almost no effort.

  • Obviously it should be
    a DRAW of tanglers
    working on
    a BLOOM of tangles

Draw: from drawing of course, but also: to cause (attention) to be given to someone or something; to exert an attractive force; to cause to go in a certain direction

    Bloom: to mature into achievement of one’s potential; to become more apparent or fully expressed; to appear or occur unexpectedly or in remarkable quantity or degree;
a state or time of beauty/freshness, and of high development or achievement

  • An “effervescence” of tangles that just bubbled up out of the gentled minds of the “tangregation”?

  • I liked to think from the beginning of groups of entanglements that belong to the same branch, thus the same dying creatures were born. seen the light but still in the process of registering them. It was very exciting for me to create them, I presented them as a “FAMILY” of entanglements because they were born from the same idea, and when creating or devising one the others were born, but they started from the same idea … and they were called the PEPITA Family! ! ! This is how I usually create group entanglements and call them “Family this or that” depending on the main idea. I am currently working to create my blog and present my tangles and we will see them parade by now, although some have already been recreated by different compets czts. A hug María and Ricks, as well as the entire Zentanglera community.
