What do You Call a Group of Tangles?

What do You Call a Group of Tangles?

Maria writes…

Dear Tanglers,

Did you know that there are specific and different names for groups of creatures? Really! And really interesting names – some unexpected, some funny, some apropos, and some, most certainly are not.

A swarm of bees.
A pride of lions.
An unkindness of ravens.
A pack of wolves.
A murder of crows.

I was thinking about this the other day and I realized that we do not have a specific name for a group of tangles . . . or for that matter, for a group of tanglers! How could that possibly be right? How did we survive this long (17 years!)?

Well, I think it is certainly time to remedy this situation. Of course, we decided that you, our beloved Zentangle community, should be the ones to do this.

So . . . your mission is to come up with names for

A GROUP OF TANGLES

And

A GROUP OF TANGLERS

And, perhaps the story about how you came up with the names; and the wonderful staff here at ZTHQ will choose a name!

We will have most excellent prizes for this, possible including a copy of the artwork shown above! So, don’t hold back! We will announce the winners in next week’s blog

So, put on your thinking caps and give it a think!

We can’t wait to hear what you came up with.

  • I like the thought of “thicket” of tangles. A thicket is a dense grouping of plants. I love the ways plants intertwine and our tangles joined together always remind me of that. I also think of us as a “community” of tanglers. A group that supports each other. We have individual gifts and styles, but we work together.

  • I like the idea, as has already been suggested, of “bevy” for a group of tanglers…and my thought of “bijou” (little gem) for the end creations made from many tangles joined together. Would Bijou lend his name to such a creation I wonder?

  • A group of people tangling is a tangregation—which is a portmanteau of tangle and congregation.

  • How about a “Swell of tangles”? So many interpretations – It is well. upswell, rising up.

  • Love this creativity exercise. I realize it’s outside of the bounds of your assignment but I submit for your consideration, a “CZTea”, for well, you know.

  • A group of tanglers- a musing of tanglers; musing is a synonym for meditation, reflection, contemplation, deliberation, all of which we do when tangling beautiful works of art A group of tangles – an aggregate of tangles because an aggregate is a collection formed from separate parts. In tangling many “parts” are used – tangle patterns, pen/ink type, paper type/size,etc

  • I previously suggested “Cornucopia” for a group of Tangles…giving it more thought, I think “Copia” might be an even better suggestion….shortening the word in Zentangle style….

  • What a wonderful challenge! Since every time I’m with a group who tangles together, friends are made, so I’d say the collective noun for a group of tanglers might be a “friendship” of tanglers.

  • The first word “Tanzenglation” came to mind. It’s like we are a creatieve nation entangled with light, and minds full fantasy, hearts full of care and attention… such a beautifull save but rare world. So therefore we Will be better known as the “Tanzenglers” .

I love our community so much! May the luckiest Tanzenglers win. ^_~

  • What a whirl of suggestions, just like a river of tangles, complete with eddies, rapids, whorls and serene passages, ending who knows where. Just as a river is not planned, it simply “is” and finds it’s own way and destiny. We tanglers are perhaps a raft upon that river, having been “saved” in many ways and surely enjoying the ride. Group of tanglers = a “raft” upon the “river” of endless patterns, combinations and confluence of tangles.

  • I’m not sure if anyone has suggested this idea yet, but I think a group of tanglers could be called “a string of tanglers”. the group of tangles could be called “a gnarl of tangelations”. There are so many very clever ideas here in these comments – all different and all beautiful, just like people’s individual tangles! What fun!

  • A dance of tangles, a symphony of tanglers. I was thinking of the harmony of a well put together tile, with each tangler bringing their individual talents to the art form while participating in the zentangle method.
