What do You Call a Group of Tangles?

Maria writes…

Dear Tanglers,

Did you know that there are specific and different names for groups of creatures? Really! And really interesting names – some unexpected, some funny, some apropos, and some, most certainly are not.

A swarm of bees.
A pride of lions.
An unkindness of ravens.
A pack of wolves.
A murder of crows.

I was thinking about this the other day and I realized that we do not have a specific name for a group of tangles . . . or for that matter, for a group of tanglers! How could that possibly be right? How did we survive this long (17 years!)?

Well, I think it is certainly time to remedy this situation. Of course, we decided that you, our beloved Zentangle community, should be the ones to do this.

So . . . your mission is to come up with names for

A GROUP OF TANGLES

And

A GROUP OF TANGLERS

And, perhaps the story about how you came up with the names; and the wonderful staff here at ZTHQ will choose a name!

We will have most excellent prizes for this, possible including a copy of the artwork shown above! So, don’t hold back! We will announce the winners in next week’s blog

So, put on your thinking caps and give it a think!

We can’t wait to hear what you came up with.

  • A serenity of tanglers. A recipe of tangles.

  • The “magic” of grouping or growing tangles led me to perhaps calling a tangleation a Phi, so of course a group of tanglers would be a “phlock”?

  • Fun ideas! A force of Tanglers and a bunch of tangles.

  • Hola María y Riky y todos incluido Bijou.

En Argentina que hablamos castellano( ya no como puro) hay una frase linda, muy linda para estos casos:
Flor de enredo que significa que es un gran pero gran enredo!!!!!!

  • I often thought these same thoughts, Maria. For fun: A Rick of Tangles and a Maria of Tanglers! LOL

Seriously, a Slowly of Tangles, since we draw them slowly; A Focus of Tanglers, since we are so focused.
I also had a stroke of tangles and a Silence of Tanglers. No matter what is selected, it is all good.

  • A Revelation of Tangles because once you learn about Zentangle it’s a revelation plus that you can come up suddenly with a new tangle while tangling!

And a Contemplation of Tanglers because it’s like a group of people who become zen by tangling together.

  • A Torus of Tanglers. From Sacred Geometry, the Torus is arguably among the core sacred geometry symbols. It is a graphical representation of the balance between spirit and matter, which only happens when energy is aligned.

  • A group of tangles – a bundle of tangles or a tangle bundle. It really reminds me of abundance. So it might be a tangle abundance, too. :)
A group of tanglers: a tribe of tanglers or a tangle tribe.

But what an amazing piece of art this is! Just gorgeous!

  • A Group of Tangles: “A Maze of Tangles”
I selected this name because I am always Amazed at how beautiful the tangles look in a group!

A Group of Tanglers: “Zen Tanglers” (one word or two)
I selected this name because when I gather with other Zentanglers I instantly feel calmness and acceptance.

  • My 10 year old grandson made a comment the other day when we were doing a tile with many tangles on it. He said – “oh, we are doing a multi tangle”. So with all credit to Josiah I would call a group of tangles a “multitangle” and a group of tanglers an encouragement of tanglers since that has been my experience! Thanks for such a fun challenge!

  • What fun and what a great blog! I have always called Zentangle enthusiasts a “Camaraderie of Tanglers” and referred to a group of tangles as a “ Memory of Tangles”.

  • I would suggest a meditation of tangles and a fraternity of tanglers. I have truly loved the evolution of the tangles I have learned (not quite mastered yet) and am so looking forward to what’s ahead. I’m 75 and have found a way to spend all those retirement hours that is so enjoyable. The people I have met have truly enhanced my life. Thank you.

    And a coven of tangles!!!!!!

Or vice-a-versa…..A coven of Tanglers and a confederacy of tangles

  • A clutch of Tangles. I like the idea of incubating or hatching the group or collection of tangles all at one time. It will be different next time and again, the time after that!

As for tanglers, I had several ideas, all in keeping it fun. My first idea was a Posse of Tanglers, and I could envision us all sitting around wearing cowboy hats!, which then morphed into Passel, and then on to Caboodle (sounding maybe too much like doodle???) but finally Coterie, which is like a circle and I love circles!!! I liked ones that don’t imply any gender or age.

  • Along the lines of a “loveliness of ladybugs,” I offer a “joy cluster/luster” of tangles and either a “peace train of tanglers” or a “compassion of tanglers”

  • Maria, I just can’t let the opportunity pass to point out that, once again, you have created a beautiful piece of art above. I think it is my favourite border of all time. With just two “simple” tangles (that everyone can master) you have created a very delicate and intricate border. Although I am totally non-artistic, I can look at your work and know that because of Zentange, even I can create something with beauty. Thank you for all your inspiration.
