Welcome to the Zentangle Project Pack No. 19 and the first day of the 12 Days of Zentangle!
It has become an annual Zentangle tradition for us to celebrate the holiday season with a series we call The Twelve Days of Zentangle. For twelve consecutive days, we deliver daily tangling lessons, guiding you through the steps to create festive tangled works of art that are all part of the same theme.
Join us as our old friend Alfie and a couple of new friends take us through The 2022 Twelve Days of Zentangle.
“Hey, Nomi, what’s that you have there?” asks Alfie.
“It just came in the mail, and it looks very intriguing. I bet it’s from our friends at Zentangle. Their packages always brings smiles and look . . we are all smiling!” Nomi says as he turns the package this way and that.
“Ooooooh,” says Marasu, “I love Zentangle packages, especially this time of year.”
“Hurry up, Nomi, let’s see what it is,” Alfie says excitedly.
“Let’s see . . . it’s different from other years. It appears to be a scroll of some sort, all rolled up so carefully,” Nomi comments quietly, careful not to damage the precious piece.
“Let’s give BaBa the sticker. He will be playing with that for days!” Alfie giggles.
Marasu exclaims, “We need some trumpets for a grand opening like this. Where are they when you really need them!”
Nomi peels the sticker off ever so gently, unrolling the tissue paper that holds it together. “Oh my, what is this?”
Alfie says, “It looks like a family tree, you know, where you fill in the names of your relatives. What in the world will Zentangle do with a family tree?”
Marasu ponders . . . “I don’t know. But I bet we will soon find out. I hope mine and Alfie’s came in the mail today as well. I can’t wait to start working on the Twelve Days of Zentangle. It’s the highlight of my Zentangle year.”
"Well, shall we start by watching the first video together?" asks Alfie.
And so, the journey begins . . .
--- + ----
This Zentangle series is unique as we will be working on one singular piece of tangled art over the course of twelve lessons. The customized surface will provide structure and a common element to guide us on this adventure together. We will methodically and magically add to the structure as we simultaneously discuss and share our system of collecting, deconstructing, and categorizing tangles. As we take you on an adventure, we will introduce you to our Zentomology™ approach. We will explore Tangle Genuses, or categories of tangles.
In true Zentangle fashion, our approach to this system is playful and open to exploration and interpretation. We use the Zentomology system as way to learn about the characteristics of tangles and explore how to use them in ways that enhance and balance our tangled compositions. As we dig into this concept, we leave a trail of tangled artwork behind us. Join us as we get tangled up in the Zentomology approach of studying tangles while creating one large piece of tangled art.
Each day, as we add to this singular piece of tangled art, we remind you to trust the process. Watch as this composition comes together with different tangles, concepts and your individual style. At the end we will bring all of the elements of the Zentangle Method together in a beautiful and unique piece of artwork.
In this first video, follow along with Molly as she guides you through added water color to our template and introduces you to the theme of this project pack.
Please share your creations on the Zentangle Mosaic App using the hashtag #PP19Day01 and #12DaysofZentangle2022.
Let us know your thoughts below and at the end of this series, we will pick a commenter at random from each day to receive a Zentangle surprise!

I have been using color a lot lately but was very excited to follow today’s video and use the watercolor pencils. I am looking forward to the daily videos, especially having had the privilege of attending Zentomology this year, and to continue to expand my knowledge!

It is wonderful to see Zentangle stretch into a larger format and I am eager to watch how this year’s twelve days unfold. Are you willing to share what kind of paper you are using and the size? I did peek around the blog and the video remarks but didn’t hear or see paper or size mentioned – but I might have missed! Thank you for all you offer during this joyous time of year. I should be addressing cards, but instead, I am reading my new Zenthology spiral bound book.

I must have checked my Emails TWENTY TIMES this morning anxiously waiting to see the Zentangle Logo! Maria, the table cloth for out buffet is AMAZING!!!! I love the way the branches of the tree intertwine in a Hollibaugh fashion! I am really looking forward to our Zentomology Approach to study tangles! (!’m glad it is studying tangles and not insects!) It truly is the most wonderful time of the year!

I am so excited to play with this one. My husband is an environmental photographer (his specialty is trees). I am hoping to give this as a Christmas gift to him. Thank you so much.
