When the Student Surpasses the Teacher

When the Student Surpasses the Teacher

It is the greatest achievement of a teacher to enable his students to surpass him.
- John G. Kemeny

We just recently hosted a fantastic online Seminar. For three intense days, we talk, we tangle, and we share as much as we possibly can with our students about the Zentangle Method. We go in depth about tangling techniques, philosophies and what it means to be a Certified Zentangle Teacher. Always at the end of our teacher training events, we are all filled with joy and gratitude and excitement as we welcome new teachers into our community of CZTs. It is wonderful to hear their stories and passion for the method. We also know that when we part ways at the end of CZT training, it is only the beginning of the new teacher’s journey. What will each of these inspiring artists bring to the method and where will it lead them?

It is hard to explain how proud we are of our CZT community. The way our worldwide group of CZTs shines is overwhelming. When Rick and Maria hosted the first CZT Seminar, I am not sure that they knew how it would grow. They certainly trusted the process and nurtured what it could be. As we look back over the years, we have so many memories of when we first met CZTs. We exchange stories, we talk about what we see them doing, how they are sharing the method. We watch, we admire, and we are consistently amazed by what our CZT community has done.

At CZT training we aim to give all the attendees the tools to launch and push themselves to learn from their experiences, to grow in their practice, and to inspire others. There is an old proverb that says, “The goal of the teacher is for the student to surpass the teacher.” We could not agree more. In so many instances, we learn from our CZT community. We watch in awe and see how they are leading the way. We see and hear beautiful passionate stories about how so many of them are inspiring minds and changing lives for the better. We cannot emphasize this enough, ZHQ has received so many emails of how practicing (and teaching) the method has had a positive impact, has truly made a difference in the quality of someone’s life, and it is because of these teachers, teaching all over the world, that it is possible.

To all our CZTs, we thank each one of you for all you do. To the CZTs who teach often and share openly and to those who share quietly and less often, we appreciate all of you. We know it takes all kinds and we are grateful for that. Thank you for being unique. We cherish all that you do as we grow and caretake the Zentangle Method.

Is there a particular CZT that has touched or inspired you that you want to give a shout out to? We will pick one commenter at random and send something special to you and your special CZT.

You can find a CZT in your area here.

  • Hi,
as a Zentangle teacher teaching others I admire the way ‘my student’ Stefanie van Leeuwen indeed surpassed me now in teaching her own students all over the world :-D It’s great seeing her work and the work of her students :-D ! <3

  • After my CZT28 training I met Romi Marks in San Rafael by attending one of her classes at Riley Street Art. She welcomed me into the community with open arms. She and two other CZT’s, JeanMarie Hayes and Pauli Bailey, had been meeting weekly to tangle together for years. Without any hesitation, Romi invited me to join this small group. Those three CZT’s became my dearest friends. We all moved out of the Bay Area but continue to meet up monthly on ZOOM. My Zentangle journey would not be complete with Romi’s generosity and caring spirit. I love you Romi, JeanMarie and Pauli!!

  • Before the pandemic, I was driving an hour to pick up my sister, have lunch, and go to Becky Boynton,, CZT, Zentangle class in Baltimore. What a treat! It felt like a vacation day. Becky is incredibly talented, so modest, an amazing teacher, and takes so much time preparing classes. When the pandemic started, her classes were on Zoom and have continued to be wonderful. I miss the in person classes, but Becky has made it possible for us to continue to feel like a very special community.

  • Shout Out to Virginia (Ginny) Stiles, CZT! Ginny first ran a beginners class in our retirement community. I signed up thinking it was a new quilting method. HA. So I joined a Zentangle drawing class. Her teaching method was outstanding and she inspired me to go forward with all things art! Ginny opened a door in my life that I haven’t had since grade school. The fun of art and tangling. I am a CZT today because of the gift of Ginny!

  • I will always remember and cherish the excitement I felt when I received a message from Elena Babayants, CZT 39 from Moscow, Russia. She was contacting me to see if her group of tanglers from Russia could participate in my project, Katrina’s Zen Kin Cousins: A worldwide Project. She is an amazing Zentangle enthusiast and she makes such beautiful art. She inspires me and represents for me the anything is possible philosophy that Zentangle possesses. The connection we have could have only been possible for my life through this association with the Zentangle method of drawing. I am 66 years old and my childhood self would have never imagined a world where I could know so many wonderful people worldwide. Elena represents one of a magnitude of CZTs worthy of mentioning as inspiration to me. Every single CZT is inspiration and I know none of this would have been possible without Rick and Maria, Martha, Molly and the Zentangle staff who are the original CZTs and by far the most inspiring of all.

  • I want to give a big shout out to Janice Kee CZT 36 because she was my first CZT friend who I have met online and we both started off together in this journey to becoming a CZT. We are both in Asia so we had to keep each other up overnight and swapping notes on the side. If it wasn’t for her, I would have given up on this journey of healing myself through that difficult time I was going through 3 years ago. She also constantly challenge me and make my Zentangle journey more colourful and fun. Thank you Janice!

  • Hi,
Annie Reiser has inspired me from the day I first “met” her on Zoom. During the lockdown, the Denver Botanic Gardens offered a 20 minute “lunchtime tangle” on Wednesdays. Annie taught those classes and it was a wonderful opportunity to do something positive, creative, meditative and fun that had absolutely nothing to do with the pandemic.
I particularly like Botanical tangles. Annie is, in addition to being a CZT, a Certified Botanical Illustrator, so the classes I have taken with her have a botanical flavor that resonates with me.
Annie and I have never actually met. Every class I have taken has been through Zoom, but her personality and gift for teaching the Zentangle method shine across the miles. She’s a lovely person in addition to her skill.
Annie has encouraged me to become a CZT which I hope to accomplish at some point.
Thanks for the opportunity to recognize Annie for her gift of Zentangle to me and many others.
