In 2010, Rick and Maria hosted a Zentangle class in Newport, Rhode Island, for passionate tanglers. This event, open to both CZTs and the general public, was one of the first Zentangle events to explore beyond the basic tangling concepts.
One of the projects completed during this multi-day workshop was an illuminated letter, created in honor of the birth of the Zentangle Method and the important role that letters play in its history. In this blog, we revisit some of the photos and reflections from 2010.
Did you know? This project would later become part of the inspiration for Zentangle Project Pack No. 23!
With memories fresh in his mind, on August 9th and 10th, 2010, Rick wrote...
We used large sheets of our Zentangle tile paper. Each person chose a letter which they painted in gold and then added their tangles. We had books of 14th and 15th century manuscripts on hand... which are also a rich resource for Zentangle tangles...

People traveled from near and far to get to Master Class, whether driving their motorhome from Louisiana, driving their car from the next state, or flying in from all over North America. The person who came the farthest though was Fina Man from Hong Kong who brought gifts for everyone.
On our second day, we continued with our illuminated letters by adding a light watercolor wash. Since our Zentangle paper is a print making paper, not a water color paper, Maria shared her technique for creating a delicate translucent wash. We set up a painting station and people got to work.

Then people returned to their tables and continued as Maria walked around.

And this is how they ended up... pretty amazing!

This post brings back wonderful memories. I attended CZT#1 in February 2010 and couldn’t get enough of this magical method. My Letter Project from the Master Class in Newport, RI, still hangs in my home. We had a ‘field trip’ one day to the American Museum of Illustration https://americanillustration.org where our brains were treated to patterns galore. I’ve attended 3 more CZT sessions and have attended all the zenAgain conferences – well, you get the idea, I love Zentangle.

The Master Class was one of the highlights of the start of my Zentangle journey. I had just finished the CZT3 workshop and by some miracle of fate a spot in the Master Class opened up! What a glorious experience! The beauty of the location, the bay doors of the hanger open to the view of the water and the enchanting and inspiring music. And spending time immersed in art with like minded people…well it doesn’t get any better than this! Thank you Rick and Marie for a life changing experience! I have taught the Zentangle Method for 16 years and will always be grateful for this opportunity. The journey continues.
