CZT Family Tree: Sylvia Levy

We always say that the Zentangle Method attracts really awesome people. We have had the pleasure of working with wonderful Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT) all over the world and we are excited to share these wonderful people with the entire Zentangle Community. Through our series, CZT Family Tree, we will introduce individual CZTs.

Today, we are excited to introduce Sylvia Levy!

Name: Sylvia Levy

CZT#: 34 & 42

Hometown: North Miami Beach, Florida

Favorite tangle: marasu, gourdgeous, pouyang... I love all of them - it depends on the day! My step-by-step Zentangle book is my meditation and inspiration journal.

How I use the Zentangle Method in my life: I practice Zentangle daily - often several times a day - not only when teaching my students or preparing projects, but also by observing patterns all around me: in parks, flowers, and plants. Each project pack feels like a self-gift, a moment of discovery. Zentangle has become part of my daily life - it is my modus vivendi, it fills my soul, and every year I look forward to attending the seminars again.

My favorite story or memory of teaching the Zentangle Method: I have five wonderful groups of students who, beyond creating amazing masterpieces with tangles, share their stories and life experiences with one another. Many of them say that Zentangle has changed their lives since joining my studio. They have grown and learned to live one step at a time - embracing it as a philosophy of life.

Through my experiences as a CZT, I have learned: Attending my first seminar in Providence was a true awakening. I didn’t want it to end - I cried and felt deeply moved to discover such a beautiful family that shares so much through their teaching. As an architect, I originally thought this would simply be a drawing course, but it gave me so much more - emotion, friendship, meditation, and inner calm.

For me, Maria, Rick, Martha, Molly, and Julie were impeccable teachers and organizers, always attentive to every student. They treat us like family and help everyone equally. During the seminar, I met people from many countries and languages, yet the only language we truly needed was the one spoken through Zentangle itself - a language of lines, beauty, and connection.

CZT Training Reflection: One of the most meaningful moments for me was the farewell - the live music, the family on stage singing and playing together, and all of us dancing with joy. In that moment, I felt the deep bond that unites us. The Zentangle family is my faraway family, yet always so close to my heart. Zentangle is my dream come true, and I hope to continue tangling until I’m 120 years old.

If I am not tangling, you will find me... I am an architect and art teacher with more than 35 years of experience. I direct an art studio in Miami, where I teach in-person classes in Art, Zentangle, and Hebrew Calligraphy. I also teach Zentangle to my grandchildren, who love it and are amazed that they can create beautiful patterns even at such a young age.

  • Thanks for sharing your story, Sylvia! I wanted to be an architect when I was younger. Unfortunately, girls weren’t allowed to take drafting in the midwestern high school I went to in the early 1960s. My father insisted I take business courses (typing, shorthand, bookeeping), because there was no money for college. I did take 4 years of HS Art class, and took calligraphy classes at a local Art center as a young adult. Learned many “hands,” including Blackletter, Bastarde, Uncial, Roman, etc., but not Hebrew. Finding Zentangle in 2018 renewed my interest in Art, (after 32 yrs working as a program analyst for the Dept of Defense). I love your bold, colorful tangling style! Your students are so lucky to have you as a CZT!
