When people ask us what is required to attend our Certified Zentangle Teacher training seminar, we respond with a simple phrase, “passion and gratitude.”
Passion, because it describes a level of enthusiasm for what you are doing. If you are excited and enthusiastically interested in something or in other words, “passionate”, it is likely to bring you joy, fuel your desire to learn more and inspire you to invest yourself in the process.
At a recent class I was teaching, I had the pleasure of teaching one of our Certified Zentangle Teachers. She came to class with some of her favorite tangling supplies. One of the items she had along with her was a box that she received prior to attending her training seminar. The box had a sticker on top that read, “Passion and Gratitude.” I was walking by her workstation and the box caught my eye. She explained to me that she uses the box as a surface to tangle her tiles on and from the looks of the box you could imagine that almost every tile, she tangled upon it left a little piece of it behind. I was mesmerized by the tangled bits that had created a patina over the words, gently wearing them away. You could almost feel the love left on the surface. I couldn’t help but think about the story this box had to tell and I was warmed by the thought that this box was no doubt filled with both “Passion and Gratitude”.
Thank You Peggy for bringing your well-loved beautiful box to class … as well as your “passion and gratitude". Amazing.

Gratitude is a favorite word of mine, but since attending CZT38 I feel like I remember the experience of passion, too! 💖💖

We should all have these two little words written all over all the surfaces, as a reminder of what’s important for our well-being. <3 There’s always some reason to be grateful for, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

I always feel the Zentangle Family’s passion in their various videos and I feel gratitude for them sharing with us. I also feel gratitude because it re-booted my love of ink directly to paper without concern for all the steps later – just drawing in the moment.

Molly – so grateful to spend time with you and Martha at Kirpalu. I love my box and take it almost everywhere I go. One of the great aspects is that zentangles are so portable. The box is the perfect size for tangling on top of and leave the little pieces you described so beautifully.

This is also a reminder for me – Gratitude and Passion: To Love One Thing. Express thanks for life by doing one thing—big or small—that thrills you.
