CZT Family Tree: Shie Naritomi

We always say that the Zentangle Method attracts really awesome people. We have had the pleasure of working with wonderful Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT) all over the world and we are excited to share these wonderful people with the entire Zentangle Community. Through our series, CZT Family Tree, we will introduce individual CZTs.

Today, we are excited to introduce Shie Naritomi!

---+---

Name: Shie Naritomi                                                                           CZT# 30

Hometown: Tokyo, Japan

Favorite tangle: Printemps & Crescent moon

Favorite place to tangle:My table

How I use the Zentangle Method in my life:
I have been working as a textile designer in Tokyo for a long time.
I draw pictures such as paisley and mandala for clothes. It's a very fun, beautiful and important job for me.
However, design work often involves mistakes and rework. Sometimes I despair to start over.
At that time, I met Zentangle, and was saved by the idea of "No Mistake."
We accept all lines and compositions. If I feel a little weird, it's not a mistake, but an opportunity.
I thought that idea was really wonderful. Accept all. I feel like accepting myself.

My favorite story or memory about teaching the Zentangle Method is:
I started an online class because of Corona. Surprisingly, there are participants from overseas.
if you read this, you will understand. I'm not good at English. (Japanese is good!)
I do classes in Japanese and a little English. Probably the pronunciation is terrible and I have no vocabulary.
Still, all the students can draw. The result is beyond my imagination. In addition to people overseas, I have also taught to deaf people.
After all she could draw! I thought that Zentangle might not need language. This is my favorite story.

Through my experiences as a CZT, I have learned:
I thought about what I could do through Zentangle. I really want to heal everyone, but unfortunately I'm talkative and laugh loudly. So I can't have a quiet and calm class.
I always try to give surprises to my students. I often keep the content of the class secret to the students.
It will be a surprise. But the biggest surprise is getting the students to know how amazing they are.
I found a passion that was hidden inside people. I learned how to bring it out.

If I’m not tangling, you will find me…: I usually draw pictures. Also, I play the guitar and sing.

  • So happy to find this on the blog! Shie is one of my favorites to follow on the Mosaic app. I’ve just discovered some of her YouTube videos, and can’t believe how much I learn from her without knowing any Japanese. Her teaching as a CZT sounds awesome! And I would remind her that laughter is VERY healing!
