CZT Family Tree: Elena Babayants

We always say that the Zentangle Method attracts really awesome people. We have had the pleasure of working with wonderful Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT) all over the world and we are excited to share these wonderful people with the entire Zentangle Community. Through our series, CZT Family Tree, we will introduce individual CZTs.

Today, we are excited to introduce Elena Babayants!

--- + ---

Name: Elena Babayants

CZT#: 39

Hometown: Moscow, Russia

Favorite tangle: I like different tangles, mostly plant and organic patterns. I like to make my drawings free and flying in the air. I like tangles – Mooka, Adry and Lilu (my tangles), Printemps, and many others.

Favorite place to tangle: I like to draw most of all at my desk in my little studio, which my husband and I recently arranged on the balcony of our apartment. I love this place very much, I feel comfortable and convenient here. And no one bothers me here with trifles.

How I use the Zentangle Method in my life: For some time I taught classes for pensioners in the Moscow Longevity group. It was a wonderful time, I really enjoyed opening up a new wonderful world of creativity to people and hearing their words of admiration and joy from drawing. I also teach online lessons in my club. I like to share with people who want to learn more about Zentangle. I like to share my ideas, I record my lessons with great pleasure. And, we also have our own Moscow club, where we meet every month at offline meetings and draw, communicate. Zentangle has given me many new friends. And we feel comfortable spending time together drawing and communicating.

My favorite story or memory about teaching the Zentangle Method is: We have a joke in our club. When we first start learning Zentangle, I tell the newbies that you don't need a lot of materials to draw, just a pen, a tile, and a pencil. A minimal set of tools. And those who have been doing Zentangle for a long time start laughing. Because it's impossible to limit yourself to this minimum. You start buying new materials with such pleasure that it's hard to stop. And now we have 100 colored pencils from different companies, pens of different colors, paper, and watercolors. It's always funny. Every time. It's fun!

Through my experiences as a CZT, I have learned: I met new people from different parts of our huge planet. I may not know their language, but I understand perfectly well what they are talking about. Zentangle erases boundaries. I realized that I can be open to the world, be more free.

If I’m not tangling, you will find me…:
Besides drawing, I like to travel. Unfortunately, it is difficult to do now. But I can walk in my city, I like to walk in the park, go to museums, and visit art exhibitions. I am very attracted to art.

  • Elena, I enjoyed seeing you and your beautiful work. I loved hearing your story from a part of the world we don’t often get to connect with. Zentangle makes us part of the same family. Nice to meet you.

  • A very inspiring read. Totally agree with you Elena the way we build up our tools n materials for zentangle art. To me it’s always been a stress buster and a great way to interact with friends over coffee. During the Lockdown time it brought us together from the safety of our homes. We tangled together n kept in touch with each other.

Thank you for sharing your Art work n thoughts too.

  • I first became aware of Elena when I was doing a worldwide project featuring my Zen Kin®️during COVID in 2020. She contacted me to ask if she and her group could contribute. I was so amazed to think someone in Russia was wanting to do my project! Zentangle brings us all together. Much love to you, Elena! You are a wonderful part of this tangling community.
