Black Tile Tangling

Black Tile Tangling

Julie writes…

When I heard that the Zentangle Time Machine's next stop was the introduction of black Zentangle tiles in 2011, I began to think about my own journey with black tiles. Admittedly, it is not a tile that I reach for often. The process felt so different and I think I just never gave them a chance. So naturally, I did not gravitate toward them.

This month, though, a little voice (Bijou.. is that you?) has been whispering to me to reach for them more often. The first thing that I was reminded of is that tangling with white ink on black tiles is a different experience than black ink on white. You do not always approach your tangling or shading the same way. I often find myself swapping fine lines for bold, inky lines, working a little larger and exploring texture tangles more than my beloved drama tangles. It took me a moment or two to fall back into the flow that comes with black tile tangling, but once I did, I found myself looking forward to watching tangles twinkle across my tile, like stars illuminating the night sky.

If black tile tangling is new to you and you find yourself with a new surface and new tools, we encourage you to pause, take a deep breath and remember that the steps of the Zentangle Method always remain the same, beginning and ending with gratitude and appreciation.

Later this month, we will explore some fun tangling tips for black tiles, so be sure to grab your Black Tile Bundle, available for a limited time.

But wait.. there’s more…

As we were collecting black tiles from around Zentangle HQ for this month, we were surprised to find not one single black Phi tile in our collection. As you can imagine, there are a lot of tiles around HQ, so I am sure there is one in there somewhere, but where?

We were hoping that you all could help us out. Do you have a black Phi tile you have tangled or one you want to tangle? Share it with us on the Zentangle Mosaic app with the hashtag #PhoundthePhi. Next week we will pick a few people at random to receive a Zentangle surprise!

  • Love Phound! And “tangles twinkle across my tile, like stars illuminating the night sky” is so poetic! Makes me want to tangle on black!!!

  • Many thanks Julie for the reminder to go bold and beautiful on the black, always a joy not to teeny-weeny tangle and find those moonlight pens too.

  • Black tile tangling still feels like a challenging surface to me; however, the exploration around it is so exciting and boosts my curiosity big time! :)

  • I love the drama of white tangling on a black tile! I ALSO love adding color to black tiles in various ways. Perhaps my favorite is to add color with markers (such as Tombows), let that dry, then tangle the tile with white gelly roll. The gel ink re-liquifies the marker colors, which just feels like magic! :)

  • I love black tile tangling too. And my students love it as well. So the new project pack and the Black Tile Bundle were ordered immediately.👏👏

  • This is great! I love black tile tangling. My students do too, especially with neon gel pens and bright colored pencils.
